Weekly Meal is a not-for-profit project with the simple goal of delivering fresh, healthy, and tasty homemade meals to the homeless of New York City. Started in late 2015 by Samara Herman and the founder of Lovably, Dylan Seeger, Weekly Meal is an attempt to brighten the nights of twenty strangers per week who desperately need love, care, and sincere attention.
In recent years, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression. According to The Coalition for the Homeless, more than 116,000 homeless men, women, and children sleep in the New York City municipal shelter system, and thousands more sleep on the streets each night. With rising rents and an overall lack of affordable housing—the primary cause of homelessness—these numbers are likely to become even more depressing in the coming years.
For Weekly Meal, Lovably designed packaging that aims to make each meal feel like more than leftovers or unhealthy fast food bought at the last minute. We tried to use great design and a thoughtful attention to the smallest details to create an experience that makes people feel considered and appreciated. Each meal comes wrapped in beautiful, recyclable wrapping along with a hand-written note. In addition to delivering meals directly, Weekly Meal is also working to publish guidelines and for people who want to replicate the project anywhere in the world.
After a couple of pilot runs in 2016, Weekly Meal is gearing up to start delivering meals every week in 2017.
